How to Stop Absorbing Other People’s Energy (And Stay Grounded as an Empath)

By Dr. Maria Furlano | The Art of Tuning In® Podcast, Episode 108

If you’ve ever walked into a room and instantly felt someone’s mood, or noticed that people naturally open up and share their emotions with you — you’re probably an empath or a highly sensitive person.

Being empathic is a beautiful energetic gift, but without clear energetic boundaries, that gift can leave you feeling tired, heavy, or overwhelmed.

In this article, I’ll share one simple tool you can use today to stop absorbing other people’s energy and start walking through life more grounded, centered, and clear.

The Hidden Reason You Feel Drained Around Others

Empaths and intuitives are naturally attuned to energy. We sense emotions, thoughts, and subtle vibrations in our environment. But if you’re not trained in how to protect, clear, and replenish your energy, that heightened sensitivity can become exhausting.

Many of my students in Medical Qigong and energetic awareness come to me saying:

“I love helping people, but I feel drained all the time.”

That sense of energetic exhaustion isn’t a flaw — it’s a sign that your awareness is reaching outward instead of staying connected inward.

Energy Protection Starts With Alignment

When we interact with someone, notice what your body does. Do you lean in? Does your head or neck move forward?

That tiny physical motion actually shifts your energetic posture. You leave your center line — your energetic alignment that connects you from the crown of your head, through your spine, to the soles of your feet.

In energetic medicine, this vertical alignment is everything. It’s the pathway that connects you to Earth energy below and Universal energy above — what I often call your Taiji Pole or central channel of light.

When you stay aligned, energy flows through you in a balanced and nourishing way. But when you lean forward, you literally step out of that current and start absorbing what’s around you.

The Simple Practice: Come Back to Your Center

Here’s your practice — and it’s one of the most powerful tools I teach:

  1. Notice your body. Are you leaning in, straining your neck, or losing your posture?

  2. Return to alignment. Sit or stand tall with a long spine, relaxed shoulders, and steady breath.

  3. Breathe into your hips. Allow your awareness to drop down into your belly and legs. Feel your feet connecting with the earth.

  4. Stay present. You can still listen with compassion, but from your center — not by leaning into someone else’s field.

This shift alone stops energetic leakage and keeps your system replenished, grounded, and clear.

Visualize a Waterfall of Light

If you like working with imagery, visualize a gentle waterfall of light flowing between you and the person you’re speaking with.

As they share their words or emotions, imagine their energy softly meeting the waterfall and washing down into the Earth.

You’re not blocking or resisting — you’re simply allowing energy to move and transform naturally.

This visualization becomes truly effective when paired with your aligned posture and grounded breath. Presence is your strongest protection.

The Art of Energetic Boundaries

Empaths often struggle with boundaries because they’re naturally attuned to helping others. We can overextend, giving from our personal reserves instead of universal flow.

Real energetic boundaries don’t come from closing your heart — they come from staying fully present within yourself.

When you’re grounded in your own energy, you don’t have to “protect” yourself by shutting down. You simply remain aligned, nourished, and aware.

In that space of neutrality, your energy uplifts others without depletion. Healing happens naturally.

Try It Now

Try this experiment right now:

  • Lean forward as if listening intently to someone. Notice how your energy feels — maybe tense, maybe pulled outward.

  • Then return to alignment. Breathe. Relax your shoulders. Feel your energy settle down and expand around you.

Most people notice an instant sense of calm, presence, and strength. That’s the power of alignment — it centers your nervous system and keeps your energy clear.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to stop being empathic to stop feeling drained. You simply need to stay in your center line.

When you are aligned — body, breath, and awareness — you stay connected to the universal energy that replenishes you. Your compassion remains intact, but your vitality stays strong.

That’s how you can keep your beautiful sensitivity without absorbing everyone else’s energy.
